End of the line for Jose as Manchester United sack Mourinho

Manchester United have this morning sacked boss Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese boss will leave Old Trafford with immediate effect, with the club in sixth place in the Premier League.

His last game in charge was Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to leaders Liverpool at Anfield.

United are currently 19 points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“A caretaker-manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager,” United said in a statement.

“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.”

Mourinho joined United in May 2016 but this has been their worst start to a top-flight season for 28 years.

The 55-year-old former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss won the League Cup and the Europa League at Old Trafford.

But this season has been marred by reports of fall-outs with star players including record signing Paul Pogba.

The race to replace Mourinho is already in full swing with former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino the early front-runners according to the bookmakers.
