'Premier League dream': Spanish starlet Joel Robles straight into Wigan Athletic's squad after loan move

Spanish Under-21 star Joel Robles will be looking to seal a spot between the sticks at Wigan Athletic after sealing his six-month loan deal from Atletico Madrid.

Robles, capped by Spain at under-16, under-17, under-21 and at the London 2012 Olympics as an under-23 will be looking to snatch Ali Al Habsi’s spot in the Latics’ goal.

The 22-year-old, who joined in time for tomorrow’s clash with Sunderland, described moving to the Premier League as a dream.

“I am so happy to be able to start my career in England,” he said.

“The Premier League is a dream for any player in the world and when you see other players from Spain and what they have done in England, it gives us hope that we can be successful here.

“Everyone has welcomed me to the club and now I just have to do my best and compete for my place.”

Robles, who stands at 6 ft 5 ins, spent last season on loan at Rayo Vallecano making 13 La Liga appearances.

Manager Roberto Martinez swooped for the highly-rated keeper after second-choice stopper Mike Pollitt, 40, got injured in the FA Cup third round replay at Bournemouth.

“Joel is a great talent and is in an exciting moment of his personal career,” Martinez said.

“His experiences at Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano will help him to bring real competition to the goalkeeping department at the club.

“We hope this can be a productive period for both him and us – we are delighted to have him on board.”
