A Bolton doctor has embarked on a remarkable new challenge after becoming a Special Constable for Greater Manchester Police.
Dr. Zaheer Khonat, who works at the Royal Bolton Hospital, is one of 51 new recruits at the force, taking their total number of Special Constables to over 800.
The 25-year-old is hoping that his new role can help to develop a new ‘skill set’, but admits that he is not looking to change his career.
“I thrive off new challenges, and joining the special constabulary is going to give me a big challenge,” Dr. Khonat said.
“I’ve always had a particular interest in the British policing system, and I saw this as an opportunity to explore this interest. This has been perfect for me to learn different types of law and what powers the police have.
“I think Special Constable is a very rewarding role which will benefit the community. There’s a great deal of satisfaction knowing that I’ll make a positive difference within society.
“I’m set on working as a doctor for the rest of my life, but this is something to build a skill set, and hopefully at some point in the future I’ll bring my medical and my police training together somehow.”
“I’m a great believer in making time for things that I enjoy, and I particularly enjoy both roles that I do. I think I’ll have to make some sacrifices but it will be worth it.”
Dr. Khonat, who graduated from the University of Liverpool last summer, was unveiled as a Special Constable at a Greater Manchester Police ceremony last night, where his family were in attendance.
“Yesterday was a very proud moment for myself and my family,” he added.
“My friends and family have been very supportive throughout. Initially when I told my mum that I wanted to join the police she wasn’t too sure about the whole idea, but she’s slowly warmed to it.”
