Festivities marking the life of England’s best-loved dragon slayer are set to kick-off again this weekend across Manchester.

St George’s Day celebrations began at midday today and will culminate in the nation’s largest parade of its kind starting from 11.30am on Sunday.

Now in its 10th year, the three mile parade will begin on Varley Street, Miles Platting, before snaking its way around the city – eventually making its way back to its starting point.

Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council Councillor Jim Battle said: “Again Manchester is putting its heart and soul into England’s biggest and best St George’s festival.

“I’d like to congratulate the organisers of the festival and parade who have worked hard to celebrate St George and show Manchester at its best.

“It’s wonderful that we can all come together for this celebration and I’m sure everyone will have a great time.”

The spectacular St George’s Day parade will include elaborate floats, bands and performers and will pass through Piccadilly Gardens, the Northern Quarter and along Great Ancoats Street.

Welcoming the parade to Piccadilly Gardens will be a dragon slaying-inspired market with tantalising food and drink sitting alongside stalls selling all-manner of arts and crafts.

Running in conjunction with the parade, the fourth- annual St George’s Day Festival will also return to Albert Square from Friday.

The festival celebrates England through the ages and will include delicious fresh food complemented by a well-stocked beer and cider marquee.

Entertainment for all the family will be provided from midday till late and will showcase music from brass bands, folk and rock acts and dancing from the ever talented Morris Men.
