Refills, not landfills… National Refill Day hopes to inspire generations for years to come in battle against plastic

Today, Wednesday June 19, is National Refill Day, so let’s unite against plastic and have the will to refill…

Disturbingly the average adult buys more than three plastic water bottles every week which equates to a startling 175 bottles every year per person.

In total, some 7.7 billion plastic bottles are bought across the UK each year, resulting in substantial amounts of single-use plastic waste ending up in our oceans.

City to Sea, a not-for-profit organisation headed by entrepreneur Natalie Fee, launched the award-winning Refill Scheme in 2015.

It’s estimated that the scheme, now being rolled out nationwide with support from Water UK and local water companies, will cut plastic bottle use by tens of millions each year, as well as substantially increasing the availability of high-quality drinking water.

Sarah Irving, Refill Regional Coordinator, said: “Every time we refill a re-useable bottle instead of buying and throwing away a single-use bottle we not only reduce the amount of plastic and fuel being used, we save a bit of money and help clean up our towns and open spaces too.”

Did you know that if just 1 in 10 Brits refilled just once a week, we’d save around 340 million plastic bottles a year?!

We should be concerned about the devastating effect plastic pollution is having on our planet. Refilling is a simple way to do something about it.

Today several companies have joined the ‘Refill Revolution’ and you will now be able to refill for free in any of their establishments across the UK.

With 20,000 Refill stations across the UK, the Refill app makes it easier and cheaper to refill at a nearby refill station than to buy a new single-use bottle of tap water. Join the revolution and download the Refill app: https://refill.org.uk/
