Jailed: Flustered drug dealer caught hiding £80,000 worth of Class A narcotics on routine Didsbury car stop

A convicted drug dealer who was found with more than £80,000 worth of drugs when police routinely stopped his car has been jailed for five-and-a-half years.

Stephon Sancroft, 37, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court today, for possession of the Class A drugs heroin and cocaine – with intent to supply.

On Tuesday May 21, two detectives from the Neighbourhood Policing Team at Didsbury stopped Sancroft’s Volkswagen Golf when the manner of his driving caught their attention, and he was also seen on his mobile phone at the wheel.

When the car was stopped on Stockport Road the 37-year-old got straight out and began talking to the officers.

“As an experienced officer you know when a routine stop is not routine, and immediately Sancroft’s behaviour aroused our suspicion,” said Detective Constable Dave Bird.

Sancroft’s agitated state and inability to answer simple questions prompted the officers to inform him they were going to conduct a drugs search – causing the drug dealer to immediately sprint off.

DC Bird said: “At the first mention of drugs he bolted and a search of his car revealed exactly why.

“With a previous conviction for drugs offences he clearly did not want to be caught.

“Unfortunately for him we were equally determined not to let him get away and with the help of radio operators and colleagues he was quickly apprehended.”

A search of his car revealed a bag under the driver’s seat containing crack cocaine worth £63,120 and heroin worth £16,100, which DC Bird believes were destined to be turned into ‘street level deals’.
