Last gasp equaliser for Woodley Sports denies FC United while Ashton United progress in style as the Road to Wembley continues

By Steven Oldham, Sports Correspondent

An injury-time equaliser for Woodley Sports was enough to deny FC United of Manchester an expected victory in the First Round of FA Cup Qualifying on Saturday.

Gary Gee’s 94th minute strike cancelled out Nicholas Platt’s first half opener for FCUM, who play their football a league above Woodley.

They will now have to do it all again on Tuesday night at Glossop North End’s Surrey Street home.

Woodley will fancy their chances against an FCUM team going through an indifferent run of form, with no victory since Bank Holiday Monday.

Ashton United thrashed Runcorn Town 5-1 to easily move through to the next round, despite going a goal down.

Striker Peter Wright hit a brace in the victory at Hurst Cross, with Ian Bennett, Ben Smith and Chris Amadi also on the scoresheet.

Ashton will struggle to beat their best performance in the competition – they have reached the second round proper twice – albeit the last time was way back in 1886!

There was disappointment for Maine Road, who lost heavily 5-1 at Lancaster City, and Trafford, who went down 2-0 at home to Northwich Victoria.

Ramsbottom United’s game against Nantwich Town on Saturday was postponed and will now be played on Tuesday night at the Riverside Stadium.

Rammy caused an upset in the previous round, knocking out Rhodri Giggs’ Salford City.

So, as the Road to Wembley continues, how is your team doing? Are they one of the teams to be joining qualification soon, such as Hyde United or Stalybridge Celtic? Are you a proud Ashton United fan or worried that FCUM will be knocked out by Woodley?

Let us know in the comment's box below.

We will be following the Manchester teams all the way through the competition.  Keep your eyes peeled for today’s draw for the next round of qualifying.
