Bury’s blossoming Rose targets ‘nine-point week’ after Portsmouth triumph

Bury are targeting a ‘nine-point week’ according to striker Danny Rose after recording a comfortable 3-0 win over 2008 FA Cup winners Portsmouth on Saturday.

Danny Mayor opened the scoring with a sublime effort, before Ryan Lowe struck on the stroke of half time and Rose added a third after the interval.

With difficult trips to Shrewsbury and Southend in the coming days, the Shakers’ joint-top scorer is confident they can outscore any team at the moment.

“We’ve got to kick on to Tuesday’s game and then Saturday’s game, which are both away games so we’re hopeful for a nine point week,” he said.

“I think if we keep a clean sheet at Shrewsbury we’ll win the game.

“We’ve been second a couple of times and we’ve leapfrogged the team in first but it’s important to stay there – we don’t want to move from there all season,” he added.

The victory moved Bury second in the League Two table and they are now two points adrift of leaders Wycombe Wanderers.

The Shakers have also scored a league high 23 goals in just 13 games and Welsh wing back Craig Jones believes that is down to their fire power.

“We’ve got goalscorers in this team – when Danny Mayor is on it the way he is, he’s unplayable at this level,” he said.

“To come from where I have with this club, to where we are now – it’s a long way.

“We’ve got two very good goalkeepers – if someone is not quite on it on a particular day, they probably get left out the following week.”

In the wake of last week’s defeat away at AFC Wimbledon, manager David Flitcroft again rotated his goalkeeper and is yet to decide on a number one this season.

Rob Lainton replaced Shwan Jalal in goal for the visit of Portsmouth and he will be hoping to retain his place after keeping a clean sheet.

He may face a sterner test on Tuesday against a Shrewsbury side that are hoping to make an immediate return to League One and lie just inside the play off places.
