General Election 2019: Meet the Worsley and Eccles South candidates

In 2017, Labour regained Worsley and Eccles South with 57.1% of the vote. Barbara Keeley received 26,046 votes, well ahead of Conservative candidate Iain Lindley with 17,667.

Barbara Keeley has been successful in the last three General elections; however the area has very high unemployment and poor health rates.

In 2016, Worsley and Eccles South voted to leave the European Union at the referendum, with a 59.8% majority.

Candidates for 2019 election:

Arnold Saunders – Conservative Party – @ArnoldSaunders5

Saunders is a Conservative councillor for Kersal, a place he gained in 2017. He is the Rabbi of the  Higher Crumpsall & Higher Broughton Synagogue. He is also a European Parliamentary Conservative candidate for North West region.

Barbara Keeley – Labour Party@KeeleyMP

Barbara was elected as the MP for Worsley in May 2005, after the constituency was re-named Worsley and Eccles South. She is the Shadow Cabinet Minister for Mental Health and Social Care. Keeley campaigns for improvements in mental health and social care services.

Daniel Towers – Green Party @TheGreenParty 

In May, Towers contended a place on Salford City Council in Irlam, but lost out to Darren John Goulden. Daniel has previously contended for council places in local elections in Claremont and Barton. This is Daniel’s first candidacy campaign to become a Member of Parliament.

Joe Johnson-Todd – Liberal Democrats@JoeJohnsonTod

Johnson-Todd is a student of Politics and Contemporary history at Salford University. Joe moved to Salford from York in 2018 and became an active member of his local Liberal Democrat party. A key policy in Joe’s campaign is to focus on the mental health of young people and other social services.

Seamus Martin – Brexit Party @brexitparty_uk

In May, Martin contended a place on Salford City Council for UKIP, but came second to Gina-Claire Reynolds. Up until this year, Seamus represented UKIP in each local election he took part in. Seamus was the UKIP parliamentary candidate in Bury South at the 2015 general election.
