Man fights for life after being hauled from Manchester city centre canal – teen arrested

A man is in critical condition in hospital after being pulled from a Manchester city centre canal on last night.

A second man who also fell into the canal managed to get out and run away, collapsing a short distance away from the scene.

And now a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and attempted murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

Greater Manchester Police Detective Inspector Brian Morley said: “We are still trying to piece together exactly what happened before these two men fell in the canal.”

Emergency services were called to Dale Street, near Piccadilly Station, at around 10.30pm amid reports that a man had fallen into the canal.

The 25-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was pulled out of the canal by fire and ambulance crews.

He was immediately taken to the MRI at Manchester Royal Infirmary and his condition has since been described as critical. The second man who had climbed out of the canal was taken to hospital for check-ups and was later discharged.

An investigation was immediately launched by Greater Manchester Police.

The arrested 17-year-old boy remains in police custody for questioning.

Police are appealing for witnesses or any information that may assist them with their investigation.

Detective Inspector Morley said: “If anyone witnessed the incident or has any information which may help us with our enquiries, please contact the police as soon as possible.”
