Manchester Food and Drink Festival release long-awaited nominee shortlist

By Hannah Hulme

The shortlist of nominees for the prestigious Manchester Food and Drink Festival awards was released today.

Hopeful nominees will discover if they have made the coveted list when the results are posted on the MFDF website, where they will then face the public vote.

A panel of expert judges, made up of the region’s leading food and drink critics, will assess the shops and restaurants via mystery visits taking place over the next few months.

These scores will be combined with the public vote and winners will be announced at the MFDF Gala Dinner and Awards on October 8 at the Lowry Hotel.

Categories include Restaurant of the Year, Bar of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, which Italian tapas favourite Chiccetti took home last year.

For 2012, Restaurant of the Year has been extended to include ten nominees, reflecting a wider scope for the category and all dining venues have been considered, even those more casual in style.

The usual Coffee Bar and Casual Dining category has been separated into two shortlists – Best Coffee Bar or Tea Shop and Best Casual Dining recognising the increasing excellence in these areas.

Pub of the Year recognition has been extended to include a brand new category – Food Pub of the Year.

Food Pioneer has also been newly created to showcase some of Greater Manchester’s most exciting food innovations and projects.

An MFDF organiser said: “All this reflects what the Festival considers to be an exciting time for the region’s dining scene.”
