Rebecca Adlington in ‘pieces’ after fearing burglars had stolen Olympic medals from Manchester home

By Danielle Wainwright

Olympic-swimmer Rebecca Adlington has had her car and laptop stolen from her Stockport home this morning but is ‘relieved’ that her medals remained untouched.

At around 12.20am 24-year-old Adlington was at a tapas restaurant in London when she was alerted to the burglary.

On hearing the news she tweeted that she was in ‘absolute pieces’ but after learning that her gold medals had not been stolen she was relieved.

The burgulars took Adlington’s laptop and a black Audi A3 which belongs to her partner Harry Needs.

A spokesman from Greater Manchester Police said: “At about 12.20am on Tuesday August 20, police were called to an address in Romiley, Stockport to reports of a burglary.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

Adlington responded to Twitter users who had joked about the break-in, she said: “To anyone replying ‘haha’ or ‘lol’ you have obviously never worked hard for something to then have someone break into your home to take them.”

Adlington, who retired in February won gold in the 400m and 800m freestyle in 2008, and gained bronze medals in London last year.

She also achieved two world championship golds, two Commonwealth titles, a European gold and 13 victories in the British championships.
