Manchester United ended heavy transfer speculation linking them with Everton’s Leighton Baines by welcoming Dutch left-back Alexander Buttner for a medical exam yesterday.

The 23-year-old, who has not been internationally capped, is on his way to securing a five-year deal with the Reds for a fee thought to be around £4million.

The Dutchman is considered far from a fully fledged first-team player but has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League and revealed his excitement at the prospect of joining United.

Buttner said: "I'm travelling to Manchester this evening [Sunday] and I'm very delighted that such a big club bought me."

The left-back, who can also fill in on the opposite flank, is being brought in as cover for Patrice Evra after Fabio da Silva was loaned out the QPR for the season, and came through the academy at Vitesse Arnhem.

The youngster has made 107 appearance for his club and was part of the provisional 32-man Euro 2012 squad but could not secure his place in the quality-filled team.
