Non-League Matters: Alan Lord wants more from ‘leader’ Jevons as Stockport seek first win in eight games

Alan Lord wants more of the same from striker Phil Jevons after last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Guiseley at Edgeley Park.

After going 3-1 down in the second half they fought back to snatch a draw, thanks largely to the 34-year-old Jevons’ hat-trick which included a last-minute penalty for his 19th of the season.

County are away to Solihull Moors at the weekend and it was the display from Jevons that should give the fans hope that they will finally find the win that has alluded them for seven games.

“Phil Jevons was outstanding. I’m looking at his body language, his motivation to and for the other players and I’m thinking, there’s a proper leader,” said Lord.

“He brought everything to the table today and if I was a player playing in the same team as him I would be looking up at him thinking, that’s the benchmark.”

That result means that the Hatters are now unbeaten at Edgeley Park for nine games, a run that has stretched over three months and that fact was particularly pleasing for Lord.

“I remember over the last few years its not been a strong point of ours playing at Edgeley Park but when you look up and see a 3-2 and you see the crowd on their feet, who wouldn’t want to be here,” he said.

In the other Skrill North game Altrincham take on Gainsborough Trinity after their 1-0 win over Solihull Moors moved them into the top four.

In the Skrill Premier, Hyde’s nine game season started on a more positive note as they drew 0-0 with Hereford United.

After their relegation was confirmed Scott McNiven’s men are now playing for pride as they look to finish the campaign strongly.

They are now one goal away from conceding 100 in the league but with the pressure off, McNiven is still determined to get some points on the board starting with Dartford on Saturday.

“We’re going to take each game as it comes and with our desire and commitment I’m sure another win is around the corner so we’ll see how we go,” he said.

“We know they are winnable games and we know we can do it. We just need to tighten up at the back and score a few goals.”
