Red invasion: Thousands of runners and cyclists to don Sport Relief colours for weekend of fundraising

Manchester United may not be at home this weekend but the streets of Manchester will be lined with red nonetheless as thousands of people take part in Sport Relief.

Whether running or cycling, Manchester is staging a range of events to help raise money for disadvantaged people around the world.

Over £50million was raised by the charity in 2012 and a mass of Mancunians will look to help beat this total by either running the Sport Relief Mile or taking on the challenge of the Manchester Cycle this Sunday.

Participants can cycle either three, 25 or 50 mile routes, all of which start and finish at Old Trafford or run a new-look route through Manchester city centre.

Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesday is one of several famous faces taking part in this weekend’s fundraising activities which organisers are eagerly anticipating.

“The Sport Relief Weekend is always the highlight of the campaign, and there will be a fantastic atmosphere at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games in Manchester this weekend,” said a spokesperson for the charity.

“It is an opportunity to get active while raising cash which will be spent helping poor and disadvantaged people in local communities, across the UK and around the world.

“Every penny counts and even a small amount can make a real and lasting change to someone living an unimaginably tough life.”

Money raised will fund a number of projects in Manchester that will help a wide range of people, including vulnerable young carers to isolated elderly people.

The run and the cycle will aim to combine fun and fund-raising as entertainment at both events will be provided in the form of dance acts, a BMX display, a climbing wall and performances from samba bands and steelbands.
