Road works costing £1.5million for improved lights on M62 to start near Oldham and Rochdale

By Charlie Boydell-Smith

Manchester motorists can look forward to improved driving conditions around the M62 due to a £1.5million scheme set to get underway next month.

The Highways Agency scheme will focus on a stretch of motorway between Junction 20 and the Broad Lane overbridge – just under a mile of the carriageway.

The three month renewal of lighting and safety barriers is set to begin on Saturday June 1 and be completed by Friday August 30.

Highways Agency project sponsor Peter Gee said: “This is part of ongoing work across the local motorway network to replace ageing lighting in the central reservation with new lighting in the verges next to the hard shoulder.’’

An attempt to limit disruption will involve work being undertaken at night.

Mr Gee said: “We have planned the work carefully to take place overnight when traffic volumes are low and we are not anticipating any significant delays for drivers.’’

As well as upgrading the motorway lighting to current standards, it is hoped that the work will reduce the frequency of future maintenance visits.

The new lighting will also be greener, reducing the motorway’s carbon footprint.

There will be some overnight closures of the eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads at Junction 20 to allow the work to be done safely.

During the week, only one of the slip roads will be closed at any one time between 10pm and 5am – or until 7am on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Drivers are being advised to leave extra time on journeys when these slip roads are closed.

Mr Gee said: ‘’Anyone wishing to join the eastbound carriageway or leave the westbound carriageway at junction 20 when either of these slip roads is closed should leave a bit of extra time to take the short diversion route down junction 19.’’
