Talisman striker Wayne Rooney is fighting to return to first-team football but will not feature in Manchester United’s clash with Liverpool on Sunday, his manager confirmed today.

The 26-year-old has been out of action for the Reds after suffering a severe gash to his thigh last month.

And despite rumours of his return, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that he has no new injury concerns, but no good news about returns.

“Everybody is available who played on Wednesday,” Sir Alex said.

“I know there were reports on [Wayne] Rooney being available but that’s not the case.

“He’s not far away, he’s working hard and we just need to get him into football training now.”

And Nani, who missed a penalty during United’s 1-0 victory over Galatasaray on Wednesday, is likely to keep his place on the left flank after Ashley Young is still out of action.

“It is bruised cartilage for Ashley Young, which will take a few weeks more,” Fergie told the club’s official website. “We will take our time with Young, he’ll be okay in two to three weeks' time.”
