‘Wear a poppy with pride’: Oldham leads Manchester Remembrance Day tributes

Oldham Council is planning a number of Remembrance Sunday ceremonies to honour those who have fallen during warfare.

On Sunday November 8 there will be opportunities to place wreaths on memorials all over the borough in conjunction with the Royal British Legion.

The council’s website now has a ‘Roll of Honour’ containing the names of all borough residents who fell serving their country from the First World War onwards.

Councillor Jim McMahon, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “The borough’s residents have the deepest respect for those men and women who have given their lives for peace, security and freedom.

“I hope as many people as possible will take the time to reflect and attend a service.

“Please support the Royal British Legion’s annual campaign and wear a poppy with pride.”

A procession will assemble on Oldham’s New Radcliffe Street at 10.20am before proceeding to the war memorial at 10.30, with the event beginning at 10.50.

Events in Chadderton, Crompton, Failsworth, Lees, Royton and Saddleworth will begin at similar times.

Saddleworth has a separate event on Monday November 2 at St Chad’s Memorial, Uppermill, at 7.15pm.

Residents will also be able to research their own family history through a toolkit, events guide and a resources pack on www.Oldhamremembers.co.uk.

The Oldham Remembers website will also have stories, names of soldiers who fell and pictures of Oldham’s past, whilst he Twitter and Facebook pages of Oldham Council will have a remembrance theme.

You can contact Oldham Council at [email protected] if you want to get involved or have any information you would like to see on the website.
