Sir Alex Ferguson is lauding the progress and approach of Manchester United’s next Premier League opponents Swansea as Jonny Evans and Nemanja Vidic are set to bolster their ailing defence.

United will be looking to maintain their six-point lead at the summit of the Premier League when they kick off the busy festive period with a visit the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

But Ferguson is wary of the threat posed by Michael Laudrup’s side, who have followed their impressive debut season in the top flight well.

"You've seen the results they have had and the progress they have made as a football club over the last years," he said.

"The important thing for me is that they try to play and have the courage to play their football.”

The Reds have four games in ten days, starting with Swansea, and the manager is well accustomed to dealing with the hectic schedule.

“At this time of year, all the games are challenges and they come thick and fast now,” he added.

“Utilising the squad is important, as is picking the right team, but hopefully we can get through it and be in the same position as we are now."

Evans, who signed a contract extension until 2016 this week, should be fit for the trip to Wales.

Rafael and Nani remain on the sidelines, while Shinji Kagawa misses out but should return to training on Monday.

Vidic may be available to start the game however, after he came off the bench in United’s 3-1 win against Sunderland last weekend.

United have kept just one clean sheet in their last ten Premier League games and Ferguson will be hoping Vidic’s return can address this.
