Manchester United make mammoth £30million bid in second swoop to lure Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona

By Marios Papaloizou

Manchester United are upping the ante in their pursuit of Cesc Fabregas, launching a second bid to tempt Barcelona to part with the former Arsenal man.

United are desperate to land the midfielder and, after having their initial approaches rebuked, have decided to hit back with a mammoth £30million bid.

New Reds Boss David Moyes is yet to make a signing this summer but the public pursuit of Thiago, Leighton Baines, and Cesc Fabregas is a statement of intent from the Scot.

At a press conference in Yokohama, Japan, Moyes spoke of negotiations with Barca.

“My understanding is that Ed’s [United’s chief executive vice chariman] had a response and he spoke with them,” he said.

“I think we made a second offer but Ed is dealing with that personally, rather than me.

“When you’re interested in good players you want to give it every opportunity to materialise and I’ll do that.”

Despite a lack of transfer action at Old Trafford the new manager is optimistic about deals getting done.

“I hope things can continue and move forward. At this moment in time I can only tell you that Ed Woodward is working very hard trying to make the deals happen,” he said.

“We can only hope that some of them fall into place shortly.”

With mega-rich neighbours Manchester City already splashing £90 million on new players in an attempt to wrestle the league back from United fans of the Red Devils are getting nervous.

“I can understand why fans are getting anxious,” Moyes said.

“I think everyone might have thought this could be the summer where the transfers come later in the month.

“You have to remember I only started the job on July 1 so, in truth, I’ve only been in the job for three weeks at this point in time.”
