Buy Art Fair returns to Manchester uniting more than 70 galleries – with cancer research cash in its sights

By Steven Brown

Art lovers from across the UK and beyond will descend on Manchester next month as more than 70 galleries come together for the biggest modern art fair outside London.

Buy Art Fair 2013 will exhibit more than 70 galleries from around the UK displaying art worth from as little as £50 up to thousands in Spinningfields from September 26-29.

Raising money for the More Tomorrows campaign, the cash will go towards building a new institute for the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) in Withington.

Thom Hetherington, Managing Director of Buy Art Fair, said: “Each year more than 1,900 people in Manchester alone are diagnosed with cancer.

“Sadly, most of us know someone with cancer and this is all the more reason to work together to raise vitally needed research facilities in the North West and support Macmillan who provide invaluable and unwavering support to those who have been affected by cancer.

“Buy Art Fair is known for offering art which is easy on the pocket, however we’re asking visitors to dig a little deeper for our charities this year.”

Now in its sixth year, the free art exhibition will present more than 500 artists over a four day period to an expected audience of 7,500.

Galleries will include UK favourites such as Art Dog London and Hepplestone Fine Art exhibiting  collections of paintings and sculptures throughout the duration of the fair.

The Buy Art Fair café, as part of The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on September 27, will be hosting a Macmillan coffee morning to promote the campaign.

For guests of the two charities the Arts Council supported by Buy Art Fair is arranging a series of special tours and discussions.

Professor Nic Jones, Director of Manchester Cancer Research Centre and Cancer Research UK’s Chief Scientist said: “Manchester already has an impressive legacy in cancer research, but to take our pioneering research to the next level we need more laboratories and more world-class scientists to come to Manchester to help us fight the disease.

“By supporting our capital fundraising campaign, Buy Art Fair won’t just be funding bricks and mortar they will be giving hope to future generations ensuring more families have ‘More Tomorrows’ with their loved ones.”

The new laboratories will hopefully attract more world-renowned scientists, allowing Cancer Research to make life changing discoveries at a faster and more effective pace than ever before.
