Salford City Reds’ new stadium is on schedule and promises exciting times for the Super League club next season.

The City of Salford Community Stadium based in Barton-upon-Irwell will initially hold a 12,000 capacity with plans to extend to 20,000 over time.

The overall £26m development of the stadium and the area has been seen as crucial and is a timely step forward in maintaining the Reds status as a top flight Super League club.

Chief executive David Tarry said: “It makes us regional instead of a town club and puts us on a different level as a sport and sports facility.  It raises our profile significantly.”

With Super League’s strict licensing procedure it is essential that the Reds have a stadium befitting of their status. Having been granted a license till 2014 there could still have been a risk of a future application being denied.

Tarry said: “The threat is still there.  We have to be a part of this and the stadium gives us this chance.”

The City of Salford Community Stadium is on track and the Reds are due to move in to their new home mid to late December, with plans to arrange a friendly in January.

With talks of a possible ground share with rugby union outfit Sale Sharks being rumored, Tarry says that at the moment Salford City Reds are the only registered club at the ground.

The Willows, in the Weaste district of Salford, will stage its last ever game against Catalans Dragons on Sunday 11th September at 3pm.
