Npower Championship newbies Bolton Wanderers recovered from their disappointing derby defeat to Burnley as star men Kevin Davies and Chris Eagles fired their way to three points against.

Manager Owen Coyle had a bitter return to Turf Moor as the Wanderers kicked-off their season following Premier League relegation, but he was greeted with a superb captain’s performance and a remarkable effort from former Manchester United player Eagles.

Coyle was full of praise for his team after the 2-0 win over Derby as they begin their hunt for an immediate return to the top flight.

Coyle said: "I thought Kevin Davies was outstanding. Even if he hadn't scored the goal he did, I thought it would still have been a man-of-the-match performance.

"He won every header that came his way, he led the line and he showed what the football club means to him.

"He's a real man's man and obviously we're very fortunate to have him here as captain."

With 13 minutes left on the clock, 35-year-old Davies volleyed in before Eagles showed cool composure to secure their first points of the year.
