A man is recovering after a hit and run collision on Portland Street, Manchester City Centre.

The victim was crossing the road when a red vehicle struck him and left him lying in the street, but he remained conscious by the time officers arrived.

Eye witnesses said that the vehicle had originally stopped but drove off shortly after the collision and the man is being treated in hospital.

The officer in charge of the investigation said: “This is a very serious incident involving a man and a vehicle.

“There was only one person in the vehicle and investigations are on-going as the man is treated in hospital. At the moment we cannot confirm if it was a hit and run.”

The victim suffered head injuries but was able to stand up and speak to officers.

One eye witness of the incident said: “The car came round the corner and smacked into the man. The thud was so loud and when the man stood up there was a huge lump on his head.

“It was definitely a hit and run as the car stopped for a few seconds and the sped off.”

The road on Piccadilly, London Road, was closed as officers investigated the incident but it is now reopen.
