Future of NHS depends on Labour wrestling power back from coalition, says Leigh MP Andy Burnham

The Shadow Secretary of State for Health Andy Burnham has said the future of the NHS depends on Labour wrestling power back from the coalition government.

Leigh’s Member of Parliament was speaking at Trafford’s election count today.

The Labour MP said ‘the NHS depends on it,’ when asked of the importance of Labour getting in to power.

Trafford Council is currently led by Sean Anstee, 26, who was elected as leader of the borough’s ruling Conservative group in February, making him the youngest council leader in the country.

This may change when the results come in however, and Mr Burnham has been encouraged by some of the results so far and believes the city are ready for change.

“There are very encouraging results for Manchester, and this is encouraging for the elections next year, it’s setting the right foundation,” the Shadow Secretary of State for Health told MM.

“Manchester don’t like the current government and they want to change it.

“People say we weren’t listening but we’re listening. We don’t take people’s votes for granted.”

Currently, the Conservatives maintain the majority of seats on the council, with 34. Labour hold 25 seats and the Liberal Democrats hold four.

The results for Trafford are expected at 2pm today.
