Hungry after the ‘hurt’: Manchester City ‘mean business’ ahead of new season, says captain Kompany

By Marios Papaloizou

Manchester City are currently the ‘sharpest’ that Vincent Kompany has seen them in a long time, according to the Blues captain.

The Blues are currently on their pre-season tour and, despite losing their opening two games, Kompany senses something stirring in the current squad.

“I can sense this team is hungry and there’s been a great group atmosphere,” Kompany said.

“At the same time, we’ve worked really hard in training and it has been really positive.

“It’s probably the sharpest I’ve seen the team in a long time.”

Kompany believes that the intense training will pay off over the course of the season and allow the Blues to reclaim the title from city rivals Manchester United.

“I know the games and results [in South Africa] probably didn’t show it, but that was only because in training we worked ever so hard and the focus was on increasing the fitness level,” he said.

“We didn’t do enough last year and I see a team that means business. That is a great thing for me to see.”

Manchester City’s assistant manager Brian Kidd added that the disappointment of failing to retain the title last season will spur City to glory this year.

“The players are hurting from last season because they are a proud bunch and they didn’t take it lightly,” said Kidd.
