‘It’s in the past’: Micah Richards confident Manchester City won’t repeat FA Cup hurt in Wigan clash

By Paddy Dinham

Micah Richards is confident Manchester City will not slip up in their Capital One Cup third-round tie against Wigan Athletic.

Richards is expected to return from injury on Tuesday night, as the sides meet for the first time since last year’s FA Cup Final.

The Latics triumphed that day, but Richards is confident of a different result at the Etihad Stadium.

“I can’t explain what happened against Wigan,” he told the club’s official website.

“Every 50/50 tackle seemed to go their way and they just seemed to win the individual battles on the day.

“That game is in the past now but we have to make sure we put things right in this game and try and progress in the competition.”

Before their defeat at Wembley in May, the Citizens had won had the last seven meetings between the sides.

Wigan’s total of two goals in 11 games at City will also do little to encourage them.

David Silva and Gael Clichy are unlikely to be risked by the hosts, with Jack Rodwell also a major doubt.

Richards, 25, believes there is enough depth in the squad to push for success in the competition without jeopardising their chances on other fronts.

“I think the Capital One Cup is definitely worth taking seriously,” he said.

“It’s a good chance for those who maybe won’t feature as often in Champions League games to play and it just keeps everyone happy.

“It’s a great platform to show what you are capable of and maybe show the manager why you think you should be playing more often – it’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
