Man Utd’s Luke Shaw out to justify £27million price tag against boyhood club Chelsea

Luke Shaw is hoping to prove why United shelled out £27million for his services when the Reds clash with his boyhood club Chelsea this Sunday.

José Mourinho’s high-flying Blues will visit Old Trafford on Sunday in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.

And Shaw, who was a regular attendee at Stamford Bridge during his youth, explained that he isn’t overwhelmed by the magnitude of the game.

“It’s a huge game – I think you can safely say it’s one of the biggest games in world football and there will be people everywhere watching it on TV,” the 19-year-old told Inside United magazine.

“There aren’t many games that are bigger than this one and that’s why I’m really hoping to be a part of it.

“I want to show people what I can do in games like this.”

Life hasn’t been smooth for United boss Louis van Gaal during his short tenure at the 20-times League Champions.

Despite spending approximately £150million this summer, United have had a stuttering start to the campaign.

By contrast, Chelsea have took the Premier League by storm this season, with new signings Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas sparking an impressive unbeaten run in all competitions.

Although top-scorer Costa may miss Sunday’s clash through injury, the United boss has admitted Mourinho’s side will be a step-up in opposition.

And for Shaw, who United signed from Southampton in the summer for £27million, is excited at the prospect of proving his worth against Chelsea, the club he supported growing up.

“Playing against Chelsea is a big thing in my family and among my friends because I was born around that area of London,” he said.

“I used to watch them when I was younger so when I first played at Stamford Bridge with Southampton it was a bit of a surreal experience in a lot of ways.

“When I first played at Stamford Bridge with Southampton it was a bit of a surreal experience in a lot of ways because it was at a ground I’d visited as a kid.

“But playing against Chelsea with United at Old Trafford is a different proposition altogether. I’m really looking forward to it, especially with how big this fixture is.

“Everyone knows that United-Chelsea games are massive, so it’s something I’m really looking forward to.”
