Crufts 2016: Didsbury dog lover, 8, excited at being in line for prestigious award

A Didsbury dog lover is in line for a prestigious award at Crufts 2016 after being nominated for the Shaun McAlpine Outstanding Young Person of the Year award.

At just eight years old, Kaydie Davidson is the youngest member at Newton Heath Dog Training Club where she helps her mum with the puppy course as well as informing other children about dog etiquette.

Her good work there earned her the Good Buddy of the Year award and now Kaydie is in line for another top gong.

The prestigious award celebrates the hard-working, inspirational and selfless actions of young dog lovers. It is the highest level of achievement for young dog lovers and will be award at the world famous Crufts 2016 on Sunday March 13 at Birmingham’s NEC.

“It’s really exciting to be nominated for the award,” said Kaydie, a pupil at Broad Oak Primary School.

“I have been to watch Crufts before. It was very good to see all the people with their dogs and see how obedient they were.

“My Nan has got two dogs and one of them is my best friend. Her name is Jazz, she is a Collie and I take her out on walks.

“When I come in from school she always comes over to me and smiles.”

For over 30 years, Ed and Cindy McAlpine have presented the Shaun McAlpine Trophy at Crufts in memory of their son, Shaun, who was tragically killed in a road accident two weeks after his 22nd birthday in November 1984.

The award is given annually to encourage young dog lovers to become more involved in dog activities, as Shaun himself had achieved considerable success as a dog handler.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club secretary, said: “Every year we receive these incredible nominations for young people working with and helping dogs.

“This award reminds us of the way in which young people and dogs together can make such a difference in society. The five finalists and their families should be extremely proud – they truly are a credit to their generation.”
