Olympic football draw: Old Trafford plays host to Team GB men's opener against Senegal

By Sean-Paul Doran

Team GB’s men’s footballers will face the challenge of Senegal, Uruguay and United Arab Emirates in the Olympic Games this summer.

Hope Powell’s women’s team will face New Zealand in the opening event at the Millennium Stadium on 25 July before tackling Cameroon and Brazil.

Recently-qualified Senegal will provide the first test for Stuart Pearce’s side at Old Trafford the following day.

Pearce said: “Uruguay will be tough but I wouldn’t dismiss anyone.”

The draw could see Premier League players Luis Suarez, Sebastián Coates, Demba Ba and Pappis Cissé feature against the crop of British under-23 players.

Each team is allowed three over-age players and David Beckham, Joe Cole and Steven Fletcher are among the names that could feature for GB.

There are no age restrictions in the women’s tournament and GB could line up against Brazil’s Marta, one of the leading lights of the sport.

Pearce has said he will pick his team solely on ability rather than reputation.

He said: “It's the only way any manager picks a squad or a team and I will do exactly the same.

“Everyone in the squad will have star quality but I'll pick the squad on merit.”

Both sides will have played their opening fixtures before the official opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games on July 27.
