Liam Farrell thrilled with new five-year deal and pledges to ‘bring more trophies’ to Wigan Warriors

By Thomas McCooey

Wigan Warriors star Liam Farrell has been rewarded for a string of solid performances with a new five-year deal.

Farrell, Super League’s top metre maker, has earned a place in the England Elite Training Squad ahead of October’s rugby league world cup.

The 22-year-old scored his first career hat-trick against Bradford Bulls two weeks ago and is desperate to turn his performances into silverware.

“I’m really looking forward to playing my part in bringing more success and trophies to Wigan in seasons to come,” said Farrell.

“As a youngster I always wanted to play for my hometown club and I am enjoying my rugby immensely at the moment.

“This is a very exciting time under Shaun Wane (Wigan Warriors head coach) and I am thrilled with the deal.”

Wane has openly expressed there is improvement in Farrell, despite the plaudits he has earned this term but is thrilled the 2010 Grand Final winner is staying put.

“Liam has been working really hard and is always looking to improve as a player,” said Wane.

“He has a great future ahead of him both at Wigan and on the international stage and this has already been recognised with his inclusion in the England Elite squad.”

Wigan chairman, Ian Lenagan, has played a pivotal role in ensuring the Warriors boast 26 home-nurtured players in their 37-man squad.

“Liam is just the sort of young player we are looking to build the team around and this again shows our commitment to looking after our own Wigan-trained talent,” he said.

“He is a player who has come through our scholarship and academy development system and this season in particular has proved his outstanding ability on a regular basis.”
