‘Incredible journey’: Rio Ferdinand extends Manchester United career with one-year deal at Old Trafford

By Alex Bysouth

A delighted Rio Ferdinand has put the finishing touches on an impressive campaign by signing a new one-year deal with Premier League champions Manchester United.

The deal will see the 34-year-old enter his 12th season at Old Trafford, having already made 432 appearances since arriving from Leeds United in 2002.

The former England international is excited to be part of a new era with the Red Devils following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and welcomed in new boss David Moyes.

“I am delighted to have signed a new contract,” he told the club website. “Who wouldn’t want to play in this fantastic team in front of 76,000 fans each week?

“It has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue. I can now fully concentrate on my club career which has worked well for me over the past few years.

“This is a great team to be part of and we are now moving into a new era with the club which is very exciting. I have met with David I am really looking forward to working with him and winning many more trophies with this great club.”

Moyes admitted he was keen to keep Ferdinand, who has won six league titles at Old Trafford, and will be looking to use his influence in the United dressing room.

“It is clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club and I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room,” said the incoming boss.

“I am delighted he has signed a new contract and I am looking forward to working with him.”
