Ex-Commonwealth champion Diane Modahl urges Great Manchester runners to use crowd as motivation

Former Commonwealth athletics champion Diane Modahl wants runners in the Great Manchester Run this weekend to draw strength from the crowd

The Manchester-based middle distance runner, who competed in four Olympic Games between 1988 and 2000, is urging runners to enjoy the day.

After founding her own sports foundation in 2010 to aid young people in sport and education, the 46-year-old believes what she teaches there can be extended to those taking part in the 10k run.

“Each time I’ve been in Manchester for it the atmosphere’s enough to get anyone going, and I know from my career the motivation that a crowd can give you,” said Modahl.

“Instead of feeling nervous and focusing on your apprehension you’ll end up feeling euphoric about being a part of a major event for the city.”

The course will start on Portland Street, and will wind its way towards Salford Quays before returning into the city centre to the finish line on Deansgate.

Elite athletes taking part include long distance legends Haile Gebrselassie and Tirunesh Dibaba, as well as 2011 winner Helen Clitheroe.

Ex-800m specialist Modahl also issued tips about training, and said competitors should not panic and make drastic changes to training schedules.

She also recommended that in the build-up to the race, a healthy mix of fuit, vegetables and carbohydrates, plus plenty of water, would be important effective run.

With many charities set to benefit from fundraisers taking part, Modahl encouraged promotion of the good causes.

“Charities need that kind of support and as an ambassador for them this weekend they’ll be thrilled every time you give them a mention.

“Be proud of yourself and no matter what time you set you’re a great ambassador for sport and dedication in Manchester.”

She also insists that preparation is key – from packing and getting a good night’s sleep the night before to having the right footwear.
