Coronation Street’s Kym Marsh is encouraging people to hold a Poppy Picnic in aid of The Royal British Legion this summer.

The actress hosted a picnic with soldiers from The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment to mark the launch of the charity campaign to hold a gathering on June 21 or at any point in the holiday season.

Ms Marsh, whose grandfather was the President of the local branch in Cheshire after serving in the Second World War, said it was a cause she cared deeply about.

“I’m delighted to be supporting the Legion’s Poppy Picnics, the charity has always been a part of my family, and very close to our hearts,” she said.

"I was extremely close to my granddad when I was growing up, and as a little girl, I was always fascinated by stories of his time in the Forces.

“Our family have been involved with the Legion for as long as I can remember, so it’s a real honour for me to be launching this campaign.”

The organisation spends around £1.4million a week providing support to personnel, veterans and families including crisis grants and money advice.

“I’d encourage everyone to get together with friends and family for a Poppy Picnic this summer, and remember the families of our amazing Armed Forces,” she said.

“As a mum, I understand the dedication it takes to raise a family, but to do so when your partner is away serving or tragically killed in Service is inspiring.”

REMEMBER ME: Picnics are the best way to honour those killed in war

Anyone who registers a picnic with the Royal British Legion will be entered into a prize draw to win a trolley dash at Iceland.

The Royal British Legion’s director of fundraising Charles Byrne said: “A Poppy Picnic is a fun and easy way to support the Legion’s valuable work whilst enjoying time with friends and family.”
