Teachers’ strike: Parents warned over Greater Manchester school closures – check if it affects you

By Kimberly Bond

Parents across Greater Manchester are today being warned that their child’s school may be among the hundreds closed on Thursday due to strike action by teachers.

A day-long strike is expected across Manchester and Liverpool, organised by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT).

The industrial action by the unions, which represent nine out of every 10 teachers in the UK, will see hundreds of schools across the region closed because of the lack of staff.

The unions say the strike is caused by Education Secretary Michael Gove’s failure to     acknowledge the extent of teacher’s dissatisfaction and ‘crumbling morale’.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said: “Unfortunately, despite our willingness to engage constructively to resolve the dispute and avoid strike action, the Secretary of State seems determined to continue arrogantly to disregard the concerns of teachers.

“Teachers, children, young people and parents deserve better than a Secretary of State who prefers reckless game playing to constructive dialogue.”

Christine Blower, General Secretary of the NUT, added: “Responsibility for strike action on June 27 rests firmly with the Secretary of State. He has utterly failed to engage with NASUWT and NUT on the critical issues of our disputes.

“We stand ready to meet the Secretary of State at any time to resolve our disputes. It is now for the Secretary of State to approach this dispute in a serious and constructive manner to achieve a resolution.”

Bollin Primary School in Bowdon, Altrincham, is one such school set to close this week – headteacher Adam Gifford sent a letter out, seen by Mancunian Matters, to parents last Tuesday.

It read: “The decision to close the school or send pupils home is never taken lightly, but in this instance, where staff have elected to take lawful industrial action, we have no choice but to take appropriate steps to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all pupils.”

The strike is likely to cause disruption across the Greater Manchester area as parents rush to arrange childcare for the day.

Parents are being asked by local authorities to check the website of their child’s school for up to date information about the strike.

Here is a break down of which schools will be affected across Greater Manchester. This will be updated as we collate the information
