By Mancunian Matters staff

Whether you’re looking for a cosy candlelit dinner for two or something to fill you when out shopping, we’ll try to cover all bases.

Many of our picks offer a special Mancunian Matters discount which is exclusive to our readers (see below for what offers there are). Just go in and tell them you read about their offer on Mancunian Matters and grab yourself a tasty treat.

NEW TO THE LIST! Taurus

1 Canal Street, Manchester

Now ten years old and renowned for being the finest place to dine in the village, the numero uno in Taurus doesn't only apply to their street number. The quality of the food here is exceptional and its location along the canal makes for a great place to go with friends in the summer months.

Famed in the area for their mussels, and we can see why. We got them served in a rich thai green broth that's worth the price alone, and you can be sure we mopped up every bit with the side dipping bread. This is where you want to come if you are yet to try this particular fruit of the sea - and you can for only £4.95!

On top of this, they put on an excellent Sunday lunch all cooked fresh that morning - so don't leave it too late because once it's gone, it's gone! Never fear though, because they also have an cracking range of cocktails available for only £3.95 between 4 and 7pm. Not to be missed...

The Rose Garden

Burton Road, West Didsbury

If you like to know where your food came from, who’s cooked it, and who’s served it to you, then you can’t get anywhere better than The Rose Garden in West Didsbury. With locally sourced food and a friendly, family run atmosphere, it provides classy, modern dining with a welcoming, cosy spin.

The Rose Garden is owned by William Mills, who’s helped in the running of it by his best friend, father, younger siblings and his girlfriend and together they provide modern British cuisine with a twist of their own style.

Orders are currently flying in for their already legendary cod cheeks with smoked apple rarebit, pancetta crisp, tomato salsa and spiced cauliflower puree.

And for the next month you can get yourself 10% OFF their a la carte menu if you mention Mancunian Matters. So what are you waiting for?

MODERN DINING: The Rose Garden in Didsbury combines classy modern dining with locally sourced produce

Leonis Restaurante Latino

55 Cross Street, Manchester

If you want to sample the finest Chilean, Spanish and Latin American food available in Manchester, then head on down to Leonis. This family run restaurant has been going for eight years and offers exotic flavours and a friendly atmosphere that will keep you coming back for more, and they are a breath of fresh air among all of the usual chain restaurants.

You can sample an extensive variety of Chilean wines, or enjoy their popular large mixed skewers, which come with rice and spicy salsa.

Their owner Luis is already looking forward to meeting Mancunian Matters readers, and is offering various lunch time and evening deals. You can get ANY two tapas and a toasted garlic bread for only £4.95 between 12 and 2pm, or come back in the evening for a starter and a main course for only £8.95.

Even better, if you say you read about them on MM, then you get a FREE GLASS OF WINE when you spend £10.

So if you want a taste of Chile, get yourselves over to Leonis - you won't regret it!

Onje

Manchester Arndale market

This little gem provides traditional African-Caribbean food, conveniently located in the market at the Arndale Centre. So when you’re feeling peckish after a long day’s shopping, you’ve not got far to go to grab some great world food.

Fast becoming a favourite with the Mancunian Matters staff, the Curried Goat comes highly recommended, though is not for the faint hearted, as it is presented in the traditional African-Caribbean style and can also be quite fiery!

For Mancunian Matters readers, they are currently offering no less than TWO MEALS AND TWO DRINKS FOR £10 to anyone who quotes Mancunian Matters (selected dishes and drinks only). If you haven’t already tried goat, you’ve no excuse!

Akbar’s

73- 83 Liverpool Road, Deansgate

If someone says “fancy a curry?” around the Mancunian Matters office, no one needs to suggest places to go – this restaurant is a clear favourite with our staff.

Sensibly priced, sumptuous curries, which they will cook to whatever heat you request. That’s right, if you want your head blown off, they’ll do it, or if you prefer to play it safe you can’t go wrong. And as for the naan… well we’ve never seen them so big.

If you’re feeling brave enough, take part in the chef’s challenge. Chicken, lamb keema and potatoes cooked in  the famous Akbar’s balt sauce served with naan and pilau rice for £11.95. If one can finish this challenge alone you will qualify for a free desert! One word of warning though: we haven’t yet!
