‘Buy this, buy that… you buy the title’: Jose Mourinho claims pressure is on Manchester City after spending spree

By Marios Papaloizou

Fresh from a bout of mind games with David Moyes, Jose Mourinho is turning up the heat on Manchester City – claiming that they are under pressure to perform after spending big.

The Special One has praised City’s performance in the transfer market but warned that splashing the cash comes with dangers.

Mourinho’s bold comments come in light of City nearing the £100million mark for spending this summer.

Speaking to reporters during Chelsea’s pre-season tour Mourinho said: “In my first spell you, the press, were always putting pressure on me saying, ‘you buy this, you spend that, you buy the title’.

“So I hope now it’s on the other side.”

The Blues have brought in Jesus Navas, Fernandinho, Alvaro Negredo, and Stevan Jovetic for a staggering £90million.

“I know the players City have bought and they’re players without surprises – they’re more than ready,” Mourinho said.

“They are players at the top of their careers who don’t need to adapt – experienced but still young, so I think they have bought very, very well.”

The 50-year-old Portuguese manager added to the mind games by saying that there should be more expectation placed on City than on his own team.

“Of course people should be expecting more of them, with their experience, than my young team,” he said.

“Young players need to learn, they need time to get to the top.

“But Navas and Negredo are two world champions, two European champions, Jovetic has been one of the best in Serie A for more than two years and Fernandinho has lots of experience.”
