'I'll have that': Michael Carrick honoured by Paul Scholes comparison in Manchester United fans' song

Michael Carrick has won titles at Manchester United, and worn the Three Lions of England with pride, but admitted a comparison to teammate Paul Scholes is high honour indeed.

United’s faithful travelling support’s tongue-in-cheek singing of "Hard to believe it is not Scholes" as the Premier League leaders dispatched QPR at Loftus Road.

But Carrick, who has been outstanding in midfield and as an auxiliary defender this season, acknowledged the compliment and paid tribute to former England man.

“Scholesy is a legend, so I don't know whether it is tongue-in-cheek but it is a nice song and I will have that," said Carrick.

"It is always good to be compared to players like that – he is as good as it gets and has been throughout his career.

"To train alongside him and have the chance to learn every day has been something I have tried to make the most of.

"It has helped me bring my own game on whether he knows it or not and that has been a big help."

Carrick, 31, received a compliment from the man himself – Scholes calling the former Spurs and West Ham United star a ‘Rolls Royce of a player’.

But Carrick shrugged that off, choosing instead to highlight why United are runaway leaders and on course for a second treble.

"It shows the respect there is within the squad for each other's game," said Carrick.

"We all have different qualities and we all want to help each other to be successful.”
