Oxford Road horror smash near Manchester University – passengers cut free from wreckage

A serious road traffic collision between two cars took place on Oxford Road earlier this morning.

The collision between a red Lexus and a Toyota Avensis taxi took place just after 10.30am outside the University of Manchester Kilburn building.

One car was overturned and two passengers needed to be cut free from the vehicle.

Both drivers have been freed and were rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary for treatment.

An eyewitness told MM: “The police have cordoned off everything for about half a mile. There are so many fire engines and police cars, it’s quite scary.

“I was there just after the crash and it looked really bad, I just hope that everyone involved is ok.”

Clarissa Giebel took to Twitter to make the case for Oxford Road being pedestrianised.

She said: “Really hope no one is hurt! Oxford Road should be closed off to cars permanently.”

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue spokesman asked people via Twitter to avoid the area while they cleared up the debris from the crash.

A number of roads remain closed including Dover Street and Booth Street West.
