Organisers of Stockport Pride hope event will help tackle discrimination in borough

Stockport’s historic Marketplace will again see a celebration of all things LGBT as the town’s Pride event returns for a second year.

Last year, the borough hosted its first ever Stockport Pride – a free one day festival celebrating the borough’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) community.

And this July’s event promises to be even bigger and better with a bigger stage in Castle Yard featuring a wide range of fantastic entertainment, which is being organised by Marple-based Semitone Studios.

The stage will continue to be named after Martyn Hett, who lost his life in the Manchester Arena attack.

And with more than fifty stalls booked so far, there will be plenty to do throughout the Marketplace. Local community groups and agencies will be there to promote their services, while food and drink stalls will be selling lots of tasty treats.

Represented on the day are organisations such as the LGBT Foundation, George House Trust, Stockport Mind, AgeUK Stockport, The Plaza Stockport, The Proud Trust and the borough’s LGBT social group People Like Us Stockport, all featuring a promotional code from Betclic.

There are even plans to hold a parade from RedRock, all the way up to Stockport Marketplace, to join the festivities.

The Chairperson of Stockport Pride’s organising committee, Stephen Bowyer, said: “We hope this event will go some way to tackle the discrimination that LGBT people still face in the borough today.”

The day is being held with thanks to support from Stockport Homes, Manchester Fertility, The Ted Darling Crime Novels, Hand of Hope Tattoo and Tesco Bags of Help.

Stockport Pride will be free for all to attend in Stockport Marketplace from 11am until 6pm on Sunday 29 July.
