Armed Forces Day 2013: Lord Mayor urges show of strength as Manchester gears up to salute heroes

By Erin-Anne Verard

The Lord Mayor is urging Manchester to pay its thanks to veterans and serving military personnel as the city gears up to celebrate Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

The day will be marked by a host of events at Piccadilly Gardens with the city centre location set to be filled with live music, family-friendly activities and food stalls.

Councillor Naeem Hassan believes Manchester will once again come together to show its gratitude to those who have served their country and honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“Armed Forces Day is a chance for us all to show our appreciation to the service men and women that have served their country along with those that continue to do so,” he said.

“Armed Forces Day 2013 will build on the success of last year’s event and I am extremely proud that the city is once again displaying the gratitude we owe to members of the Armed Forces, both past and present.”

The day of celebration runs from 11am until 5pm and there will be an opportunity for people to try out an RAF flight simulator and army climbing tower.

At 11.30am there will be a Veterans’ Static Parade of Standards and throughout the afternoon there will be music, including a performance from the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers band.

The public are also invited to take a ride in the Manchester Starflyer, which gives a unique and exhilarating view of the gardens.

Similar to previous years, special offers are available for Armed Forces personnel and veterans on production of a Veteran’s Badge or Armed Forces ID card.

Veterans interested in taking part in the Parade of Standards should register before the day by contacting contact Linda Fell at the Royal British Legion on 0161 638 9236 or via e-mail: [email protected]

Throughout this week, the Armed Forces Flag is being flown from Manchester Town Hall.
