‘Into the unknown’: Wigan boss Caldwell expects the unexpected from Oldham new man David Dunn

Gary Caldwell admits Wigan are entering the unknown when his team make the short trip to Oldham this weekend, but thinks that they are improving every week.

Wigan travel to Boundary Park looking for a fourth win in five games after an improved recent run, but they know that their away form is their Achilles heel.

And with David Dunn taking interim charge of Oldham for the first time at home after Darren Kelly was sacked, changes may be made tactically and in personnel for the home side.

“We are unsure how they will set up, they’ve got a few players on loan this week but it’s mainly about us and how we approach the game,” Caldwell told the club website.

“Away from home we know we need to improve and we are ready for that challenge.”

The manager knows that they have the players to do well in this league and with a number of them returning from spells on the sidelines, the squad is looking strong again.

“There are a few people back in training,” he said.

“Whether they will be available for the squad, I’ve not decided yet, but the numbers are increasing, and that’s what we need.”

“It’s been a good spell, but we need to get a run together and remain unbeaten.

“At this stage in the season it’s about sticking in there and being around the top teams to make sure we can push towards the end of the season.”

Victory for Caldwell’s Latics could see them move into fourth spot, dependent on other results.

Oldham currently sit in 21st in Sky Bet League One on eight points from eight games, but a victory for them at the weekend could see them rise as high as ninth, such is the close nature of the league table at such an early stage in the season.

An initial allocation of 1,200 for away fans has already sold out but Gary Caldwell is urging supporters to make the short journey along the M60 to support the team.

The Latics’ average away attendance this season currently stands at 1,155; considerably higher than their final season in the Premier League.

He said: “The backing home and away has been exceptional this season and the supporters have consistently travelled in big numbers.

“That adds a huge belief to the players and let’s hope another big following is there on Saturday and that we can reward them with a positive performance and result.”
