Tenth tier Stockport Town FC pull off major coup… by signing Robbie Savage

Former Premier League star Robbie Savage has come out of retirement… to sign for non-league side Stockport Town.

The former Wales international hasn’t played since 2011 when he decided to hang up his boots after a career which spanned 15 years.

Since ending his playing days Savage has shaped out a media career, appearing on the likes of BT Sport and BBC Radio 5 Live, as well as lacing up his dancing shoes and appearing on Strictly Come Dancing.

Starting out at Manchester United, the midfielder carved a terrific career out for himself, notching up 623 professional appearances, with the likes of Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City, where he won the League Cup in 2000.

The Wrexham-born man also represented his country on 39 occasions.

But after eight years away from the pitch, Savage will turn out for Stockport Town who play in the Northwest Counties First Division South the 10th tier of English Football, with the Welshman tweeting “Looking forward to it.”

Savage is expected to line-up for Adam Jones’ side in tonight’s home fixture against FC Oswestry Town.
