Stealing in the suburbs: Chorlton-cum-Hardy named UK burglary hotspot

A Greater Manchester suburb has been unveiled as number three in Money Supermarket’s annual list of the UK’s top 20 burglary claim hotspots.

In Chorlton-cum-Hardy, 52 of every 1,000 home insurance quotes contained a claim for burglary.

Other areas high up on the list included South and West Yorkshire where residents were more likely to have filed a claim for theft.

But it was the capital which topped the list with 55 of every 1,000 home insurance quotes on the site included a burglary claim.

According to the stats, house number 89 was the most likely to claim for burglary.

At the bottom of the list, rural locations such as Lochee in Scotland and Felixstowe in Suffolk had 0 claims for theft in 1,000.

Homes in burglary hotspots also had difficulties finding insurance as insurers took into consideration the probability of a burglary claim when pricing insurance policies.

Someone living in Chorlton could expect to pay significantly more than those in Suffolk or Cumbria.

The comparison site suggested improving home security would help lower insurance premiums, claiming that many insurers might offer a discount if home owners implemented an insurer-approved alarm.

The website used a burglary claims tracker to find areas where claims were more likely.

According to the site an average combined building and contents insurance typically costs £120.

Figures were based on claims made in the last two years and analysed from December 2013 to November 2014.
