Cold feet on the street: Corrie offers ice cream to lovers told ‘I do… not’ on bended knee

Corrie fans rejoiced last week when Gail McIntyre got down on one knee in Nick’s Bistro and popped the question to Michael Rodwell.

After 40 years and four weddings on the soap, the former Mrs Platt/Tilsley/Hillman has had more husbands than servings of Betty’s Hotpot and now Coronation Street The Tour is giving fans the chance to follow in her footsteps.

The team are calling on loved-up partners to pop the question on the cobbles this Valentine’s Day and all those who get a ‘yes’ will receive a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates to celebrate.

But don’t worry, those who don’t quite get the answer they’re hoping for can get absolutely Peter Barlowed on a large, cold… Tub of ice cream.

General Manager of the tour, Andy Begg said:“Coronation Street is a big part of millions of people’s lives and so it makes sense that they would like to carry out an important life event here by proposing to their loved ones on the old Corrie cobbles.

“As it’s Valentine’s Day we wanted to make it that little bit more special by gifting the newly engaged couples with champagne and chocolates.

“We understand that not everyone who is asked the big question says ‘yes’, and so as a small gesture from us we will also be giving the one who has just been turned down a tub of ice cream to help cheer them up.”

There have already been several proposals since The Tour opened in April last year with fans creating their own drama by getting down on one knee.

Popular spots to propose include inside the Rovers Return and out on the famous cobbles.

Australian couple Keith Monks and Charlie Acton were the first to get engaged on the famous street last July after Keith surprised his partner during her tour.

When the doors to Nick’s Bistro opened, Charlie got more than she had bargained for as she spotted Keith down on one knee on the cobbles holding a ring, in front of a banner asking the question, ‘will you marry me?’

As well as getting engaged at The Tour, couples can also tie the knot inside the Rovers Return meaning happy couples can return to the cobbles for a Weatherfield wedding shin-dig.
