Greater Manchester Police out to prove themselves as top dogs on Twitter as part of global social media drive

Greater Manchester Police are out to prove they are top cops on Twitter tomorrow with their support for the third global law enforcement social media day.

The city’s bobbies will be joining forces from the likes of the USA, Canada and New Zealand in posting their activities throughout the day under the hashtag #poltwt in a bid to connect with Mancunians.

And the Blackley branch of GMP has already proven to be tech savvy after being named in fifth spot for their contribution in the inaugural Tweet-a-thon back in March 2013.

Deputy Chief Constable Ian Hopkins, national lead for digital engagement, said: “We know there is a huge amount of interest in what we do and we want to give people as much access as possible to their police service.

“This is a great opportunity to highlight the good work taking place and the officers bringing it to people through social networks. They are doing this day-in and day-out and I hope more people will connect with us.”

There will also be a Twitter chat with the host of the GMP’s quick safety advice #60secondsecurity videos PC Chris Hayden at 1pm, who will be answering questions sent to the hashtag #askGMP.

The twice-a-year social media marathon lasts for 24 hours in each timezone and encourages officers from international, national and local forces to ‘tweet their beat’.

Organisers LAwS Communications, who have expanded the competition to out lets other than Twitter for the first time, are now offering various awards to get coppers clicking.

Awards will be handed out in categories, including: best overall innovative use of social media, best hang out on air, best video, best selfie and most retweeted.

GMP has almost half a million followers on social networks and has more than 350 officers and staff trained to use social media to connect with their local communities.
