Funny business: Manchester’s finest entrepreneurs to perform stand-up comedy in aid of cancer charities

By Chloe Vinden

A team of eight Manchester business minds will swap number-crunching reports for the bright lights of the stage in aid of The Christie and Prostate Cancer UK next week.

The event which is to take place on October 2 at Deansgate’s Comedy Store, will see the eight contestants battle it out on stage to see who will be crowned the funniest.

The group will be judged by Don Ward, founder of The Comedy Store, Alistair McGeorge, CEO of New Look and Jason Cooke, the man behind the BBCs sitcom Hebburn.

Taking part in the unusual challenge are  Deloitte UK Executive member Sharon Thorne, Christie CEO Caroline Shaw, Elaine Birchall of PZ Cussons and Urban Splash Chairman Tom Bloxham.

Also competing for the prestigious crown are DX Group CEO Petar Cvetkovic, Richard Duerr of Duerr’s Jam, founder of Chess Telecom David Pollock and Senior Independent Director of Fenner Plc, Vanda Murray.

Sharon Thorne said: “When we embarked on this challenge, it was so far away that I thought I might have emigrated before it happened! No such luck! And even though I’ve practised my routine for weeks and have had a couple of really encouraging warm up gigs, I still get panic every time I think about it.

“I’m passionate about fundraising and have done some crazy things in my time but this has got to be the one event that I am most nervous about.”

All remaining tickets for the event can be purchased via funnybusinessnw.co.uk or contacting organiser MC2 on 0161 236 1352.
