A husband and wife who consistently fed falsified information to the police, after ‘flagrantly flouting the driving laws’, were this morning fined £3,000 and given a suspended prison sentence.
Dr Iziegbuwa Omoregie, 33, and Mr Allison Omoruyi, 39, who lived on Farm Meadow Road, Wigan, but have moved to Sunderland Close, activated automatic speed cameras on 11 separate occasions.
Each time they were sent Notices of Intention to Prosecute, but they returned them with falsified names and addresses of people from foreign countries not responsible for the driving offences.
They then registered new cars under different aliases to avoid being identified by the Greater Manchester Police.
After their arrests, they were interviewed for their offences but continued the fabricated accounts that different foreign residents were driving the vehicles at the time of the speeding offences.
Constable Steve Oliver said: “Both Dr Iziegbuwa Omoregie and Mr Allison Omoruyi not only flagrantly flouted the driving laws, but actively attempted to mislead police.
“They were quite happy to waste police time and have shown a complete disregard for the law with their actions.
“They have both now paid the price for their disrespect for the driving laws, sustaining damage to their reputations, a total of £3000 between them and 160 hours of working in the community.
“I hope this makes a strong point that no matter what your standing in society, no one is above the law and you will eventually be held to account for what you have done.”
Subsequent investigations revealed that Dr Iziegbuwa Omoregie had been driving for each of the occasions where the speed cameras had been activated.
The pair both pleaded guilty to conspiring to pervert the course of justice and were given a three month prison sentence suspended for 12 months, 80 hours unpaid work and each received a £1,500 fine.
