Nothing but the best: Oldham boss Lee Johnson believes only perfection will do against ‘tough’ Shrewsbury

By Matthew Naylor

Oldham manager Lee Johnson believes anything less than 100% from his players will result in defeat in their League one visit to Shrewsbury Town.

The Football League’s youngest manager has called on his young squad to keep their momentum going after a strong run of results in both the league and cups.

The Latics’ manager knows the physical manner that Town play the game and so will need to stand up to that style if they are to continue their run which sees them unbeaten in November.

“It’ll be a really really tough game,” Johnson admitted.

“They work hard for the team, they’ve got good spirit and they’ve got some players that can hurt you.

“Any less than us being fully on our game, we won’t get a result.”

Oldham, still in both the FA Cup and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, are now hoping that the weekend’s victory atGillinghamcan begin a surge up the League One table.

The win on Saturday was only Oldham’s second on the road all the season, but Johnson is hoping that having a near-full squad of in-form players will help increase that tally.

“We know how quickly football changes for the better and the worse,” Johnson told reporters.

“We’ve got two strikers chomping at the bit, both looking really sharp in training.

“[the selection dilemma] is a nice problem to have.”

Oldham currently sit in 15th place in the table, just one point behind Tuesday’s opposition and, with another game at the weekend, could finish the week in the top half of the table.

“We want to leapfrog them in the table so only a win will do as we want to start nudging our way up the table slowly but surely,” said the optimistic 32-year-old.

“There were things we were decent at from the start but we have managed to add that little bit extra in the last few games.

“We need to go and be really strong, stand up to them and then play our stuff as the game goes on. “
