Lesbian and bi victims offered sexual violence lifeline in ‘how to get help’ guide

Lesbian and bisexual women who have been victims of sexual violence can now receive free help and advice through an online guide.

The guide is the first of three information booklets for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people who have experienced sexual violence.

Research shows that LGBT people rarely succeed in finding support for the fear of experiencing homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. A study in 2013 showed that 65% of sexual attacks on LGBT people are not reported.

All of the guides will be funded by Tony Lloyd, Police and Crime commissioner for Greater Manchester, to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Mr Lloyd said: “Sexual violence is an issue that affects all communities and sadly there are too many victims within the LGBT community suffering in silence.

“The guide will be an important step in giving victims advice and confidence to come forward and report the violence.”

The innovative booklet, developed by the Lesbian & Gay Foundation (LGF), is aimed at providing survivors of rape or sexual violence with information and help to find the support they need.

Sian Lambert, Women’s Programme Coordinator for The LGF, said: “Lesbian and bisexual women may be additionally affected by homophobia or biphobia or by assumptions and stereotypes about their lives.

“This guide recognises that women who have relationships with other women can also be affected by rape and sexual violence. The guide will also offer help and support that they may need to overcome their fears from the attack.”
